Hostel Non-Negotiable’s: A Guide to Choosing the Best Hostel

When heading to Europe for the summer 2024, you’ll need to sort through the thousands of hostels available to find what best suits you and your budget. Everyone’s travel style and budget are different, therefore, everyone has their own preference on where they will be willing to stay. How low do you stoop to save a few extra euros?

In my adventures, I’ve compiled a checklist of hostel must-haves. While my budget is tight, there are non-negotiable’s that make my stay not just affordable but also comfortable and enjoyable.

The List

Lockers

There’s nothing worse than worrying about your belongings while exploring a new place. A locker that can fit my backpack is essential. (Remember to always bring your own lock.)

Kitchen

On a super tight budget, food is the one thing that we sacrifice spending money on to allow us to explore more of a place. Being able to cook our own food makes life 1000x easier and helps the budget.

Luggage Storage

By taking cheaper transportation routes, you often find yourself arriving early or leaving late in places. Being able to drop off your luggage at the hostel to allow time for exploring is amazing.

Good Location

Always check the location of the hostel it needs to either be within the city or close to public transport.

Good Reviews

This is the most important. Thoroughly check the reviews from other backpackers; everything may appear great in the description, but an honest review is essential. When booking on Hostelworld, I always look for a place with more than 8 stars. It also may be worth checking the google reviews as well.

For the easiest way to book accommodation, check out Hostelworld. It provides you with a chat feature that lets you meet other travelers in the area and at the hostel. It also lets you see all the events that your hostel may be hosting. Hostelworld.com

If you’re looking for hostel recommendations, I’ve stayed in lots across Europe and have done honest reviews on all of them. My up to date list can be found here.
