Here’s your quick budget friendly guide to exploring Eilean Donan Castle on a budget. If you are visiting the Scottish Highlands, chances are you’ve considered a trip to this iconic castle. We managed to secure a ride there on one of our days off from work. Despite the rainy weather, it enhanced the experience of visiting a historic castle in the Scottish Highlands, creating a magical atmosphere.
Now, a bit about the castle itself. Eilean Donan Castle stands out as one of Scotland’s most recognized landmarks, it can be seen on calendars , postcards, cookie tins. Undoubtedly a Scottish icon, it ranks among the top visitor attractions in the Highlands. The moment you lay eyes on it, you’ll understand why it draws people year after year. Perched strategically on its own island, overlooking the Isle of Skye, where three sea-lochs converge, and surrounded by the majestic Kintail mountains, Eilean Donan’s setting is genuinely breathtaking.
Budget Friendly Tips:
Here’s how to visit on a budget. We personally didn’t go inside the castle as the £11 entrance fee seemed a bit on the pricey side, and we weren’t too bothered about exploring the interior with only half an hour before our ride arrived. Without a ticket, you can still cross the bridge to the castle and stroll around the outside, which we were very pleased about; it was perfect for us. The castle presents a picturesque scene, especially on a typical rainy and misty Scottish day.
If you’re looking to save money and aren’t particularly interested in the castle’s interior, doing what we did would be ideal for you.
Our visit in mid-November was incredibly lucky as it was reasonably quiet. Although a few tour buses were present upon our arrival, the car park was mostly empty, which was great. I can imagine that in the summer, the bridge and the castle’s exterior would be bustling with tourists arriving by the busload.
I am so happy that we experienced this castle in true Scottish style, amidst rain and mist. I recommend visiting, even if it’s just a quick stopover like our visit in the Highlands.
